I enjoyed the passive and active stances one can take while fighting (a very common occurrence when one simply tries to tire or outmaneuver an opponent and not actively hurt him, which wasn't as well emulated in the previous ruleset). to 4E and then to 5E), there are two distinct categories of people who will perceive the changes between editions differently. Not letting that same mechanic slip into combat on the other hand is a very obvious choice, so bonus points for that. It feels kinda quaint and wholesome, even giving the advice of don’t meet prospective players the first time in private. In another novelty, just like in the characteristics before them, the half and fifth of each skill is recorded from the beginning on the record sheet for immediate reference in the case of harder rolls.

But I liked the abundance of examples provided in the Keeper Rulebook as well as the appendix distillation of the key elements in one place at the end. The end pages on this book are amazing and I just wish they would use these end papers all the time. There are ten questions that need answering, from the character's personal description and his ideology and beliefs to his treasured possessions and his injuries and scars. There are many aids provided like sample hazards and barriers for car and foot chases, as well as optional rules like random hazards, collisions etc.

The two things I’ll likely take away from this chapter is the chapters Evidence of Spells Being Cast and Disrupted Spell Casting. The first step is rolling 3d6 per characteristic and multiplying the result by 5, in what is the standard procedure of character creation. Conversely, some of the few humans that have come to know of the existence of these alien monstrosities perceive them as gods. Traces of their cyclopean cities can still be found on remote islands, buried amid the shifting desert sands, and in the frozen wastes of the polar extremes.Many of the students would choose placements related to their majors, but for folks like me who didn’t see a connection between their major and any of the volunteer opportunities there was the option to do a tour of potential places to volunteer. Optional rules enable players to spend Luck points to turn failed Skill rolls into successes, and to increase Luck in the same way as Skills. Looking at the ones effectuated here, I can easily see how someone could be annoyed by the Chase rules, which admittedly provide an action frame to a game otherwise oriented towards investigations. The players must devote quite some time to fill in their character sheet properly, even though multiplying and dividing is not much of an issue; a table provides the halves and one fifths for every single value from 0 to 100. The last part about looking online I imagine would look a lot different from when this was written with the increase in online play over the last few years.

Not to say that the Keepers Rulebook was confusing, but the style was a bit wordy (much like Lovecraft himself), while the Starter Set was a bit more concise.Well-built, sturdy, and chock-full of excellent rules and details on the depth of the system and what it's capable of in terms of collaborative storytelling.
