About this deal

The full title is "Agatha Christie's Death on the Cards", created in 2019 by Modiphius Entertainment, a game publisher based in the UK. As the ‘Murderer’ your aim is to either use up the play deck until the ‘The Murder Escapes’ card is revealed, or get everybody else to reveal all their ‘Secret’ cards. If you can’t go, or choose not to, you must discard at least one card but can discard up to all your remaining cards and draw back up to 6 from the deck or the communal bank (which is immediately refreshed). Everything needed to play Death on the Cards fits neatly into a 4×6 inch box, making it easy to travel with.

With various interruptions during the game and going over the rules, it took about an hour to finish a game. When he's not stressing over how to do that, he's a DM, Cleric of Bahamut, cosplay boyfriend, and occasional actor.Naturally, when the opportunity to review Agatha Christie’s Death on the Cards arose, I jumped at it. One person's shy new girlfriend who nobody knows might slide under the radar only to be the werewolf all along. With the way the box opens, it would have been a clever idea to make it look like an Agatha Christie novel.

Growing up, I was always the kid begging to play Clue when board game nights rolled around and spending countless hours with HER Interactive’s Nancy Drew PC games. It’s as if the villain in one of the original novels, rather than cleverly covering their tracks, preferred to walk around covered in blood, clutching a dripping dagger and wearing a bright pink T-shirt saying: IT WAS ME!Plus all the cards have clear instructions on and that along with a well written instruction booklet makes the game quick and easy to learn. The ‘Detectives’ must be played in sets of 2 or 3 as the card specifies (Harley Quin can only be used as a wild card). Players use Event and Detective cards to reveal secrets, with the murderer hoping to run out the shared deck of these cards.

Our aim is to inspire those who read, play or encounter our work with tales of heroism, adventure and courage. I recommend three or more players, with the more you have the (slightly) better the chances are for the murderer to escape. They're all amusing and encourage tactical play, but one of the coolest/cruellest ways of cutting to the heart of the matter is a 'devious' card. This is where Death on the Cards gets really interesting: those mechanics demand that players aggressively protect themselves, and nothing makes someone seem shiftier than relentless self-preservation.In this card-driven game players work co-operatively to solve a murder, using their detective skills to unmask the culprit and prevent their escape. I remember games of Clue seemingly lasting hours as a kid, which almost certainly won’t happen with Death on the Cards.
