About this deal

Box succeeds in full sun or shade. Buxus sempervirens often occurs wild as an under-shrub in mature deciduous woods. But it will grow faster in relatively high light levels. As you can see from the above, feeding box trees is a simple process that differs when growing in the ground compared with container cultivation. Clipping plants at the right time - traditional trimming advises trim 1 mid-May - June, trim 2 September – October. The best practice advice now recommends one trim a year in September in dry, cool and perhaps windy conditions. Avoid clipping in bright hot sunshine which can cause leaf scorch. Comb through the plants to collect and remove all clippings. Clean all pruning equipment between plants; The more formal your hedge, the more trimming it needs. Aim for a dwarf hedge to start, then gradually build height and width once the plants are full and dense.

Happy in any aspect from full sun to full shade although some shelter is recommended as a strong prevailing wind may cause leaf scorch. For individual specimens–dig a planting hole to a spade's depth and a diameter of three times the width of the rootball. A wide hole encourages the roots to spread outwards. Buxus pruning can be easy, or it can be an art form. It depends entirely on you, and your own style of gardening. Personally, I love the simplicity of Buxus domes and softly curved hedges, which take little effort to maintain. The soft, new growth on box can be very susceptible to frost damage; those young leaves turn white and translucent. The frost damaged growth is often thought to be box blight. And it is most often seen on low, flat-topped hedges that have been stimulated into growth by early trimming. Always avoid bulky organic manure immediately around the plants as this stimulates soft growth. Remember to trim at the right time: in midsummer. However, if you can’t improve the growing conditions, you may need to move the plant to a more suitable position. Unfortunately, this shrub can be prone to a number of pest and disease issues, so it is important to make sure that box is kept in good condition, as healthy plants are able to better withstand any issues that come their way. If growth is poor, you can feed with an organic fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone in spring – however, this is often unnecessary and organic mulch will be sufficient to keep plants healthy and well-fed, provided your box is growing in reasonably healthy soil. Feeding Box Grown In Containers

Bronze or orange colouring of foliage – often caused by environmental stress, usually hot, dry spells in summer. Root damage, due to winter waterlogging, may also be a factor. In the growing season (March – October), Top Buxus Health Mix should be applied several times per month to strengthen and feed the plants. What is the best fertiliser for Buxus?Put in enough soil so that when the root ball rests on it, it reaches to about 3cm below the top of the pot. This makes it easier to water the roots. And it leaves room for you to put some decorative stone on the soil if you wish to cover it up. Buxus can tolerate part shade, and will grow in shady spots too (albeit a little slower and with less foliage) but full sun is its preference. You will notice on any Buxus hedge that the side facing away from the sun will be paler, and have sparser foliage. This isn’t any fault of the gardener, it’s just the natural way that Buxus develops. It is almost impossible to over fertilise Buxus as they are considered a gross feeder (a plant that requires more fertiliser and nutrients to grow successfully) and therefore generous amounts of fertiliser should be applied. Buxus respond best to nitrogen based fertiliser applied in regular intervals during the growing season of mid-October to April.
